ITAT Case Status: Search by Assessee Name, Appeal Number or Acknowledgement Number

Where ITAT Cases Live Online#

The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal is the final fact-finding authority in the income-tax appeal chain — after the CIT(A), before the High Court on substantial questions of law. For a CA or tax counsel, an ITAT appeal is rarely a single event: it is months of stay applications, adjournments, part-heard hearings and, finally, a pronouncement that determines a real demand.

The official source for status is the ITAT's judicial portal (itat.gov.in), which lets you search case status by appeal number, filing date, assessee name or acknowledgement number, bench by bench. This guide covers how each search works, how to read what you find, and how firms track dozens of appeals without assigning an article clerk to the website.

Decoding ITAT Appeal Numbers#

Every ITAT matter carries a number like ITA 2905/BANG/2025 — type, serial number, bench code, year. The types you will meet:

PrefixWhat it is
ITAIncome Tax Appeal — the main appeal against a CIT(A) order
SAStay Application — seeking stay of the disputed demand
MAMiscellaneous Application — usually rectification under section 254(2)
COCross Objection — the respondent's objections in the other side's appeal

The bench code is the city abbreviation — DEL, MUM, BANG, CHNY, KOL, AHD, PUN, HYD and so on across the Tribunal's benches. One assessment dispute often spawns several of these at once: the ITA, an SA riding on it, and later an MA. Track them as a family, not as isolated numbers.

The Four Ways to Search ITAT Case Status#

1. By appeal number

The cleanest search when you have the memo of appeal: select the bench, choose the appeal type, enter number and year. Best for checking a specific matter's next date or status.

2. By assessee name

The search you need when a client walks in mid-dispute, when you've taken over from another consultant, or when you want to confirm *everything* pending in a client's name — including departmental appeals filed against the assessee that nobody told you about. Name searches need patience: try the exact name on the PAN, then common variants.

3. By filing date

Useful mainly for confirming that a fresh appeal or application has been registered and numbered after e-filing.

4. By acknowledgement number

The e-filing acknowledgement lets you trace a matter that has been filed but not yet numbered — the gap period where an appeal-number search returns nothing.

Reading ITAT Status and Stages#

Statuses you will commonly see on the record, and what they mean in practice:

  • Pending — registered, not yet concluded; watch the next-hearing date.
  • Fixed — listed for hearing on a specific date. This is your prep trigger.
  • Heard — arguments concluded; the order is awaited. Pronouncements can follow quickly or after a gap, which is precisely when daily manual checking gets abandoned — and when an automated order alert earns its keep.
  • Disposed — order pronounced and the appeal concluded. Get the order copy, compute the effect, and calendar the High Court limitation if the result warrants an appeal under section 260A.

Adjournments are a fact of Tribunal life. The status may not change while the next-hearing date moves repeatedly — which is why tracking the *date*, not just the status, matters.

Stay Applications: The Matter Inside the Matter#

An SA has its own listing rhythm and higher stakes per hearing: recovery pressure usually continues until the stay is decided, and stays come with conditions and expiry. Two practical rules:

  1. 1Track the SA and the ITA separately. They are listed separately and decided on different days; watching only the main appeal means learning about the stay order late.
  2. 2Calendar the stay's life, not just its grant. Stays are typically time-bound or tied to the appeal's disposal; an expiring stay with a distant hearing date is a problem you want to see coming.

Tracking a Whole Appeal Portfolio#

For a firm with ten, fifty or two hundred ITAT matters across benches, the website workflow does not scale: every matter, every bench, every few days, plus the assessment-year folders nobody fully trusts.

The ITAT tracker on India Case Status handles this as a portfolio:

  • Add matters by appeal number, or find them by assessee name — SAs, MAs and COs alongside the main ITA.
  • Bulk-import your existing list via CSV — the whole portfolio in one sitting, not one matter at a time.
  • Alerts when the official record changes — next dates, status moves, and the order PDF delivered against the case file when it is uploaded.
  • Cause-list digests and a hearing calendar shared across the team, so bench clashes and outstation hearings are visible weeks out.

The Lawyer Pro plan (₹999/month, up to 500 matters) fits most tax practices; multi-partner firms use the Firm plan (₹799 per seat/month). Signup is self-serve — see plans. Corporate tax teams with custom needs can request a corporate plan.

Frequently Asked Questions#

How do I check ITAT case status online?

Search the ITAT judicial portal by appeal number, assessee name, filing date or acknowledgement number for the relevant bench. For ongoing monitoring, add the matter to India Case Status — the ITAT tracker alerts you when the next date, status or orders change, so you check nothing manually.

Can I find all ITAT appeals against one assessee?

Yes — the assessee-name search surfaces matters in that name before the bench, including departmental appeals where your client is the respondent. Run it with name variants when you onboard any client with a litigation history; surprises here are common.

How long does an ITAT appeal take?

It varies widely by bench workload and the issues involved — months to a few years, with stay applications moving faster than main appeals. The practical answer is to track the next-hearing date rather than rely on any average.

What happens after the ITAT decides?

The order is uploaded to the official record. On questions of law, either side may appeal to the jurisdictional High Court under section 260A within the limitation period — so getting the order promptly, and calendaring from its date, matters. Tracked matters on India Case Status get the order PDF as an alert when it is published.

Does India Case Status cover ITAT benches outside the metros?

The platform tracks ITAT matters against the Tribunal's official record across benches. Add your appeal number and the bench comes with it; if you practice across multiple benches, the calendar view keeps outstation listing dates visible early.
