Every filing in the Supreme Court of India is first assigned a diary number by the Registry (for example, Diary No. 12345/2026). What is the difference between a diary number and a case number in the Supreme Court?
The diary number is the receipt number the Supreme Court Registry assigns the moment a petition is filed, before scrutiny. Once defects are cured and the matter is registered, it receives a case number such as SLP (C) No. 4321/2026 or W.P. (C) No. 210/2026. Both identify the same matter at different stages, and you can track with either.
